How much pea gravel do I need?
Pea gravel is small (≈6–10 mm), rounded stone ideal for patios, paths, play areas and drainage. To estimate it, multiply the area by the depth, then convert to weight using a density of about 1.79 t/m³ (≈3,015 lb/yd³).
- Measure the area to cover.
- Choose a depth — 2 inches (5 cm) is typical for pea gravel; use 3 inches for a softer, deeper layer.
- Calculate the volume, then the weight and number of bags.

How many bags of pea gravel?
Bagged pea gravel is often sold in 0.5 ft³ bags (about 50 lb). There are roughly 54 bags per cubic yard. For larger jobs, bulk delivery by the tonne or cubic yard is far cheaper.
