How much topsoil do I need?
Topsoil is estimated by area × depth. Loose topsoil weighs about 1.3 t/m³ (≈1 tonne per cubic yard), though wet or compost-rich soil is heavier.
- New lawn / overseeding: 5–10 cm (2–4 in).
- Garden beds: 15–20 cm (6–8 in).
- Raised beds: fill to the box depth (often 25–30 cm / 10–12 in).
Bags of topsoil
Bagged soil is often sold in 25 L bags — about 30 bags per cubic yard (≈40 bags per m³). Bulk delivery is much cheaper for beds and lawns.

Frequently asked questions
How much topsoil do I need?
Multiply the area by the depth. For example, 100 ft² at 4 inches needs about 1.2 cubic yards. The calculator shows cubic yards, tonnes and bags.
How much does a cubic yard of topsoil weigh?
About 1 tonne (roughly 1,000–1,300 kg) for typical screened topsoil; wetter or compost-heavy soil weighs more.
How many bags of topsoil in a cubic yard?
About 30 bags of 25 litres each per cubic yard. Bulk delivery is cheaper for larger areas.
How deep should topsoil be for a new lawn?
About 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) of quality topsoil before seeding or sodding.
