What is construction aggregate?

Aggregate is the broad term for granular materials — gravel, crushed stone, sand and recycled concrete — used for bases, concrete, drainage and fill. Pick the material in the density menu so the tonnage is accurate.

Common aggregate densities

MaterialDensity (t/m³)
Crushed stone / crusher run (base)1.60
Gravel1.52
Sand1.60
Limestone1.68
River rock1.44

How to calculate aggregate

Volume = Area × Depth

Tonnes = Volume (m³) × Density (t/m³)

For a compacted base under a driveway or patio, 10–15 cm (4–6 in) of crusher run is typical. See the crushed gravel calculator for Canadian sizes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much aggregate I need?

Multiply area by depth for the volume, then by the material density for the weight in tonnes. Select the material in the calculator so the density is correct.

What is the density of aggregate?

Most construction aggregate is about 1.5–1.7 tonnes per cubic metre; sand ~1.6, crushed stone ~1.6, gravel ~1.52, limestone ~1.68.

How much aggregate for a base layer?

A compacted base for a driveway or patio is typically 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) of crusher run. Enter your area and depth for the exact tonnage.

Is aggregate sold by weight or volume?

Bulk aggregate is usually sold by the tonne, and sometimes by the cubic yard. The calculator gives both plus cost.
